10.25.16 PREA and Advocacy: Victim Support Services to Incarcerated Survivors

PREA and Advocacy: Victim Support Services to Incarcerated Survivors” is a regional workshop for Superintendents & PREA Compliance Managers at NCDPS Adult Correction Facilities and Executive Directors & PREA point people at rape crisis centers to gain an understanding of this federal corrections mandate. This training is intended for the above mentioned individuals working in the following counties: Bertie, Halifax, Hyde, Nash, Northampton, Pasquotank, Pitt, & Tyrell (NCCASA’s Northeastern Region with prison facilities).

Correctional staff will have time in the morning (9:00am – 12:00pm) to increase their knowledge and skills around various advocacy concepts related to PREA. Advocates will join correctional staff from their county for an afternoon (1:30pm – 4:30pm) of dialogue and activities to develop their partnership in providing support services for survivors who are behind bars.

Tentative schedule
8:30am – 9:00am                    Corrections Registration 

9:00am – 12:00pm                  Morning session (Corrections only)

Training topics include but are not limited to:

  • Sexual Assault 101
  • What is Victim Advocacy?
  • Communicating with LGBTQ+ Populations

12:00pm – 1:30pm                 Lunch on your own/Advocate Registration
1:30pm – 4:30pm                   Afternoon session (Corrections & Advocates together)

Training topics include but are not limited to:

  • Dynamics of Sexual Abuse in Confinement
  • Reporting, Response, & Investigation Process
  • Case Studies
  • Partnering to Provide Services to Incarcerated Survivors

This training is free however advanced registration is required. Participants will be provided with the training address after registering.

Registration must be received by Tuesday, October 18th.

This training will take place in Windsor, NC (Bertie County) and will be facilitated by Tricia Smar, NCCASA’s PREA Victim Service Program Specialist.
