2017 Legislative Report
2017 was a very busy year for anti-sexual violence advocates. Our legislators down on Jones Street were very busy as well. Please download our 2017 Policy Year in Review, which includes a summary of the recently released NC budget.
Some quick headlines from the report:
• The NC budget for FY 2017-2018 / FY 2018-2019 maintains stable funding for rape crisis centers, totaling $2.895 million.
• The NC budget requires each local law enforcement agency to “conduct an inventory of Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kits in its custody or control” and report their findings to the State Crime Lab by January 1, 2018.
• Federal funding of VAWA, STOP, and SASP are stable and/or increased in House Appropriations bills – a hopeful sign for continued federal funding. This is the first step on just one side of Congress, but this is a positive sign.
• Recent major changes to criminal law include the expansion of which victims our “Revenge Porn” statute covers and the addition of “threatened use of a weapon” to
