• March: PREA & Jails: What Advocates Need to Know

NCCASA’s first PREA webinar of 2017 will provide advocates with an in-depth look at the culture and dynamics of jails in North Carolina. We will explore the factors affected survivors of sexual abuse in jails and the impact of PREA on jails. Then, we will hear from 3 jail staff who work directly with PREA in their urban, rural, and suburban facilities about what they want advocates to know about their work. The jail panelists will also be fielding questions from participants during our Q&A.

• May: Adapting Services for Incarcerated Survivors: Coping Skills and Safety Planning Behind Bars

This second session of the Spring 2017 PREA Webinar Series will address service adaptations when providing services to incarcerated survivors. Many advocates have requested more details and tangible skills related to coping skills and safety planning to meet the needs of survivors behind bars, so we will examine best practices. We will also hear from advocates here in NC about how they have adapted services to fit both the needs of the survivor and the parameters of the facility.  There is time for Q&A toward the end about providing coping skills and adapting interventions for incarcerated survivors.

• March: Training Advocates to Serve Incarcerated Survivors

In NCCASA’s first PREA webinar of 2016, we will discuss how to prepare your advocates to work with incarcerated survivors. We’ll start by addressing individual and organizational barriers, then we will share a host of advocate training resources. Next, we will delve into what topics you’ll want to include in your advocate training. Lastly, we will troubleshoot some common advocate questions and invite you all to ask questions of your own. This training was conducted by Tricia Smar, NCCASA PREA Victim Service Program Specialist.

• September: Where Has NC Grown in PREA?: 2014 – 2016

To kick off the Fall 2016 PREA Webinar Series, NCCASA’s first webinar will examine the progress NC has made around PREA in the past 2 years. We will recap the results of the 2016 PREA Survey given to all NC rape crisis centers, discussing where we have grown in PREA support services. Then, we will address some common stumbling blocks that came up in the PREA Survey to support us continuing to move forward as a state. There will also be time for a Q & A with the audience to field additional questions. This training was conducted by Tricia Smar, NCCASA PREA Victim Service Program Specialist.

• October: PREA Tools: Inmate Brochure & PREA Audit Report

This second session of the Fall 2016 PREA Webinar Series will add several tools to your PREA toolbelt. First, we will introduce NCCASA’s new inmate brochure, “What is Victim Advocacy?” created by members of the PREA Advocacy & Advisory Board (PAAB). We’ll walk you through the document and how it can be shared with prisons and jails. Next, we will examine the PREA Audit Report, including what advocates should look for and how it can strengthen your partnership with corrections.

• November: Hospital Accompaniment with Incarcerated Survivors

This third session of the Fall 2016 PREA Webinar Series will cover hospital accompaniment with incarcerated survivors. We will discuss what to expect when advocating for an inmate who has been assaulted and how to work with both corrections and hospital staff to provide as safe a space as possible. You will also hear from NC advocates who have provided hospital accompaniment to incarcerated survivors and the advice they have to share.

• October: Victim Support Services 101

This first installment of the Fall 2015 PREA Webinar Series provides an overview of PREA as it relates to victim support services. First, we re-introduce the basics of the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Second, we dig deeper into the standards addressing victim services and outside agencies. Lastly, we address what PREA and these standards mean for your agency, including the importance of establishing a relationship with your local correctional facility. • November: Steps to Providing Services Behind Bars

This second session of the Fall 2015 PREA Webinar Series tackles providing services for survivors who are incarcerated. First, we look at how training can play a role in helping your agency and the correctional facility better understand one another. Then we utilize principles from Just Detention International’s advocate resource, “Hope Behind Bars” to provide tools and concrete steps for providing support services to incarcerated survivors. • December: Confidentiality and Mandatory Reporting in Corrections Settings

This third session of the Fall 2015 PREA Webinar Series will address cover confidentiality and mandatory reporting as it relates to PREA. The roles and responsibilities of correctional staff and victim advocates may seem to be at odds. We will break down the legal and ethical requirements of each when it comes to providing services for incarcerated survivors. This webinar will be lead by Tricia Smar, NCCASA’s PREA Victim Service Program Specialist.
